Südpack’s innovative new mono-plastic packaging concept is a polypropylene (PP)-based pouch that supports regulatory demand for recyclable packaging, while still providing the same functionality as standard pouches.

The principal goal of this development was to reduce the carbon footprint by substituting aluminum and to optimize recyclability and improve material efficiency, says Holger Hoss, Südpack product manager.

The material is highly rigid and offers all the properties necessary for the safe and efficient packaging of food products. Depending on the products, the films can be supplied with different barrier properties for aroma, oxygen, moisture, or UV light.

Südpack’s new material can be used on existing lines designed for processing aluminum composites with or without minor adjustments.

The structure of the sealing layer allows for the easy and efficient integration of resealing systems made with PP or polyethylene plastics.

The company’s SPQ technology not only reduces ink and solvent consumption, but also significantly improves print quality.

“Our recyclable monomaterial solution results in an overall improvement in the carbon footprint of every single [pouch],” says Hoss.

The all-plastic pouch also helps to ease an aluminum shortage.
